Case Studies
Aerospace & DEFENSE
In the past, the client needed to rebuild lost or damaged models, using the fragile 2D engineering drawings, and recertify them with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Now, the digital data is on file, allowing fast and smooth recreations.
Per the client, “Dimensional Engineering responds immediately when we need them. Their expertise in 3D digital data capture has been a tremendous asset to us. The technology they apply is as accurate as it gets.”
The finished model documented every detail of the drill fixture in a complete bill of materials (BOM) list. The manufacturer’s quality assurance department certified the data to ensure that the required accuracy criteria were fully met. Once QA approved the data, it was used to duplicate the series of tools.
Our virtual assembly study showed that some of the existing tooling could be implemented as is, while other tooling needed modifications. The analysis specified the modifications required.
A total of four AICM dispensers were retrofitted to the aircraft’s outer skin, with a complete mounting structure inside the aircraft. The project was completed before the deadline, and the quality exceeded the client’s highest expectations.
Automotive
In the client’s words, “Year after year, companies were contracted to investigate this problem, but until Dimensional Engineering came in, we never addressed it successfully. We can easily measure the results by how many chains we need to replace during the year. We have not broken a chain since Dimensional Engineering left our plant.”
Based on the results of this study, the stamping plant recognized the adjustments needed to eliminate the oil canning effect on the SUV hoods received from Source “A” and implemented the changes accordingly. This resolved the quality concerns.
Our client, an automotive seating engineer, describes the benefits of the Dimensional Engineering approach in this way: “In the past, our biggest problem was efficiently and accurately capturing the seat’s development at every step. The laser scanning technology lets us do this. We have even been able to eliminate expensive template fixtures.”
DIMENSIONAL COntrol
Dimensional Engineering uses both pre- and post-machining to help maintain the dimensional integrity of the oil rig platform. The result is continuously efficient operations.
HEAVY MACHINERY
The client now has the security they were previously lacking. They know that if recreating the specialized fiberglass tooling should ever be needed, they have accurate, up-to-date 3D digital data that can spare them from unnecessary retooling expense.
The solid model captured by Dimensional Engineering enabled the manufacturer to run crash simulations and understand how effectively the trailer’s new safety features would work in real-life crash situations.
OIL & GAS
Our “Virtual Built and Bolt” process verified an error-free module and gave the client a high level of confidence in the build.
Bottom-line benefit: The oil rig suffered total downtime of just hours, rather than weeks – thanks to this innovative new-school approach.
Power & Energy
You can liken this project to automobile maintenance: The better tuned the engine, the longer the car will stay on the road. In the same way, there’s no reason a well-tuned turbine engine can’t keep performing as it was designed for as long as the useful life of its parts.
The client told us this was their fastest installation on record. No modifications were necessary. After installing the first intercooler successfully, the client has had Dimensional Engineering monitor all subsequent installations of the vessel.
